  1. About 15 years ago during a period in my life when I commuted up and down the west coast in pursuit of a career as a documentarian, I chanced upon a mid-70’s wrestling magazine of the more serious style. It had an article detailing the history of black wrestlers and it noted Small as the first (but with no mention of the “Black Sam” monicker). I floated the concept of a film about him, and it garnered some interest among my crowd. My life went in a different direction and I am glad to discover that i was not alone in thinking his life and times deserved to be in some way memorialized and chronicled. I admire the effort of the filmmaker cast and crew in doing so.
